Das Universal Computer Protocol (UCP) wird verwendet, um Kurznachrichten zwischen einem SMSC und anderen Netzwerkelementen auszutauschen. Für Software-Entwickler existierte bei LogicaCMG Telecoms (nun Acision) eine API für unterschiedliche Betriebssysteme (Linux, Digital Unix, Windows und Solaris) sowie eine detaillierte UCP-Spezifikation.
